Hackathons guide

Which hackathons can students in India join, and how do they help you get a job?

Last updated · 5 min read· By NextKnock Team· live data as of 20 Oct 2026

Short answer

Students in India can join online hackathons on platforms such as Devfolio, Unstop and Devpost, plus college, company and government-run events. They help you get hired because they give you a finished project, public proof of skill, and contact with sponsor companies. NextKnock lists 18 hackathons open for registration right now, closing soonest first.

A hackathon is a short event, usually 24 to 48 hours online or on a campus, where teams build a working project around a theme. For students in India, hackathons are one of the few ways to get real proof of skill, a team project and a conversation with companies, without needing work experience first.

Why hackathons help you get a job

  • A finished project with a demo and code, which is the strongest thing a fresher resume can show.
  • Public, checkable proof. 'Top 10 at [event]' is easy for a recruiter to verify, unlike 'good problem-solving skills'.
  • Company contact. Sponsors and judges are often engineers from companies that hire; some hackathons say up front that winners can get interviews, internships or offers.
  • Interview material. You'll have a real story about trade-offs, teamwork and deadlines.
  • Teammates and a network of people who are also building things.

Types of hackathons students in India can join

Where hackathons for students usually come from
TypeWhat to expect
Platform hackathons (Devfolio, Unstop, Devpost and others)Online or hybrid, open themes or sponsor tracks, often open to all students.
Company-run hackathons and challengesSet by a company around its products; strong results can lead to interviews or internships.
Government and institution-run hackathonsLarge national events such as Smart India Hackathon, with problem statements from ministries and organisations.
College fests and club hackathonsGreat for a first hackathon: friendly, local, and often in person.

How to do well, step by step

  1. Pick a hackathon that fits

Check eligibility (students only, year of study, country), mode (online or in person), team size and themes. Your first one should be online and open to beginners.

  2. Form a balanced team early

Two to four people with different skills: someone for the frontend, the backend or data, and someone who can present and design. Find teammates in college clubs or the event's community channel.

  3. Read the problem statements and judging criteria

Judges usually score on problem fit, working demo, technical depth and presentation. Choose a problem you can show working, not the most ambitious one.

  4. Scope small and ship a working demo

Build the smallest version that solves the core problem end to end. A simple product that works on stage beats a big idea that crashes.

  5. Use sponsor tools when they help

Many hackathons have sponsor tracks and prizes for using a company's API or platform. It can also be a natural reason to talk to that company later.

  6. Prepare a sharp 2–3 minute pitch

Problem, who has it, your solution, a live demo, and what you'd build next. Practise it, and record a backup demo video.

  7. Publish everything afterwards

Clean up the repo, write a README with screenshots, deploy a demo, and add the project and result to your resume and LinkedIn within a week.

Putting a hackathon on your resume

List it under Projects or Achievements with the event name, your result, what you built, the tech, and links. For example: 'Built a bus-arrival predictor for a city transport theme in 36 hours (Python, FastAPI, React); top 10 out of the submitted teams. Demo + code links.' Our resume tips for freshers cover the format.

A word on fees and fake events

Most good student hackathons are free to enter. Be careful with events that charge high fees, promise guaranteed jobs, or ask for personal documents up front. Register through the official event page.
